Prioritizing taxa for genetic reference database development to advance inland water conservation

چکیده

Biodiversity loss has accelerated over the past century and freshwater species overall are among those experiencing greatest declines. Genetic resources have potential to help evaluate full magnitude of this represent a key tool effectively allocate conservation monitor success restoration efforts. The power genetic will be realized when daunting task referencing all DNA sequences organisms is complete. Here, we quantified availability distribution barcode genome data for macroscopic in Canada, country rich inland water thus particularly vulnerable aquatic losses. Impressively, most (86 %) were represented by barcodes recorded BOLD Systems database, while very few had genomes available (<4 NCBI database. We identified deficiencies northern regions taxa assessed as at risk or without sufficient information status classification. As expected, speciose insect group lower-than-average number records per high proportion deficient adequate coverage. This study highlights where future sequencing should prioritized within initiatives such Canada BioGenome Project BIOSCAN provides workflow that could applied internationally inform management plans mitigate biodiversity loss.

Prioritizing Populations for Conservation Using Phylogenetic Networks

In the face of inevitable future losses to biodiversity, ranking species by conservation priority seems more than prudent. Setting conservation priorities within species (i.e., at the population level) may be critical as species ranges become fragmented and connectivity declines. However, existing approaches to prioritization (e.g., scoring organisms by their expected genetic contribution) are ...

Prioritizing conservation investments for mammal species globally

We need to set priorities for conservation because we cannot do everything, everywhere, at the same time. We determined priority areas for investment in threat abatement actions, in both a cost-effective and spatially and temporally explicit way, for the threatened mammals of the world. Our analysis presents the first fine-resolution prioritization analysis for mammals at a global scale that ac...

Combining genetic and demographic data for prioritizing conservation actions: insights from a threatened fish species

Prioritizing and making efficient conservation plans for threatened populations requires information at both evolutionary and ecological timescales. Nevertheless, few studies integrate multidisciplinary approaches, mainly because of the difficulty for conservationists to assess simultaneously the evolutionary and ecological status of populations. Here, we sought to demonstrate how combining gen...

Prioritizing Land and Sea Conservation Investments to Protect Coral Reefs

BACKGROUND Coral reefs have exceptional biodiversity, support the livelihoods of millions of people, and are threatened by multiple human activities on land (e.g. farming) and in the sea (e.g. overfishing). Most conservation efforts occur at local scales and, when effective, can increase the resilience of coral reefs to global threats such as climate change (e.g. warming water and ocean acidifi...

A Climatic Stability Approach to Prioritizing Global Conservation Investments

Climate change is impacting species and ecosystems globally. Many existing templates to identify the most important areas to conserve terrestrial biodiversity at the global scale neglect the future impacts of climate change. Unstable climatic conditions are predicted to undermine conservation investments in the future. This paper presents an approach to developing a resource allocation algorith...
